About the team ==================
We’re building a new integration team in Toronto focused on bringing core eBay capabilities into adjacent marketplace platforms. The team sits at the center of a strategic initiative to deliver marketplace capabilities such as identity, demand generation, payments, and shipping as reusable services, with the potential to expand across additional platforms over time.
Role overview =================
This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced backend engineer who can define architecture, write production code, and drive execution in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment. You’ll lead the technical direction for key platform integrations, partnering closely with engineering teams across multiple stacks and geographies while staying deeply involved in implementation.
Key competencies & responsibilities =======================================
- Lead the technical architecture for a marketplace integration team, from early concept through implementation
- Write and ship production code; this role is expected to be heavily hands-on
- Drive architectural discussions, design reviews, and PR reviews across integration workstreams
- Translate ambiguous business or product goals into clear, scalable technical solutions
- Partner closely with engineering teams to integrate services across distinct platforms and tech stacks
- Help define how eBay capabilities can be exposed as services for other platforms and future integrations
- Influence engineering best practices around system design, maintainability, and long-term scalability
Must-have requirements ==========================
- Strong hands-on backend engineering experience in Java
- Proven ability to lead technical architecture and make sound system design decisions
- Experience building or integrating distributed systems and service-based architectures
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and forming a clear technical point of view with incomplete information
- Strong individual contributor mindset with a desire to grow as a technical leader rather than a people manager
Nice-to-have requirements =============================
- Experience with GraphQL, especially federated graph architectures such as Apollo
- Experience with Scala, Kotlin, or other JVM languages
- TypeScript and/or Node.js experience
- AWS or other cloud infrastructure experience
- Familiarity with full-stack or web architecture
- Experience in startup, scale-up, or other high-ambiguity environments
- Experience in marketplace, commerce, or platform-as-a-service style companies
